Histologic Changes of Rabbit Retina by Various Laser Wavelengths

Abstract
This study was conduced to identify differences among the histological changes of the normal rabbit retina induced by the dye laser with arious laser wavelengths, i.e., blue green(488 nm), yellow(577 nm) , and red(630 nm), respectively.
Under ketamine hydrochloride snesthesia, the central portion of the rabbit retinae were photocoagulated by Dye Laser Photocoagulatro(MDS-10, Meditec Co., Germany). The parmeters used for photocoagulations were identical for all four
waveengths(spot size, 300¥ìm ; duration, 0.1 second ; power, 100 milliwatts). Twety-four hours after exposure, the central portion of the lesioned retinae were dissected, fixed in 10% formalin for 24 hours, washed, dehydrated and finally embedded in paraffin.
The sections were cut at a thickness of 6¥ìm, stained with hematoxylin-esoin and observed with light microsope.
@ES The results were as follows ;
@EN 1. All lesions showed genral thickening of the retinae.
2. All lesions showed damages of the outer retinae and retinal pigment epithelium.
3. With the red laser light, damages of the inner retinae were noted.
4. Coagulations of choriocapillaries were were noted in all lesions.
5. Greater damages to the choroid were noted with the red laser light than with the green, yellow and orange laser light.
In conclusion, longer wavelengths developed deeper burns at acute chorioretinal lesion of laser photocoagulation.
